When we looked at the list of restaurants that had met the Green Restaurant Association (GRA) requirements for certification, guess how many we found in Georgia? One.

You read me right - one. As of this writing, only one Georgia restaurant has met the strict requirements of zero Styrofoam use, full recycling program and the accumulation of at least 100 points in the GRA rating system. At least minimum requirements must be met in all categories the GRA follows, such as energy use, chemical and pollution reduction and the use of sustainable food. If others do meet the qualifications, they haven't told the GRA about it.

And which restaurant is the only one in Georgia to earn certification? Drum roll, please....... The winner is Radial in Decatur.

We weren't surprised to read about Radial's inclusion in this program. We eat there when we can because we like the food and we feel good about knowing our straws are made from corn - not some freaky plastic that will end up in the landfill with all the other freaky plastic along with (guess what?) Styrofoam.

Radial is turning 10 years old this month and will be celebrating with a party on April 17 from 7-9. The restaurant is also celebrating Earth Month with some freebies - if you bring in your own coffee cup you get a free cup of coffee. If you bring in your own reusable container for a take-out meal, you get a free cookie or brownie. These incentives may help people get in the habit of bringing their reusables in even after the offer expires at month's end, not just to Radial, but everywhere.

I lifted this next sentence right off my Radial email. "While our to-go packaging is more eco-friendly, the best option is always something that gets used again and again."

Thanks for the reminder, Radial. Fill 'er up.
