Summits Wayside Tavern

We were running around last Saturday, trying to finish all our errands in one trip and lunch time found us in Snellville on Hwy 78. We headed straight for Summits Wayside Tavern, where we knew they had several tasty vegetarian choices on the menu. They also have a very impressive line-up of beers, but I had way too much yard work to do later. Beer for lunch makes me want to nap.

I had the veggie nachos and Kathy had several vegetarian sides as her meal - spinach with roasted red bell peppers, spicy black beans, garlic mashed potatos, jalapeno cole slaw. Really, really good, all of it. The only problem was that when we asked about their to-go boxes, we got the dreaded word - "Styrofoam."

We talked with Kevin, General Manager of the Snellville Summits (they also have stores in Cumming and Woodstock), about the possibility of using something other than Styrofoam and he agreed to look into it and pass our concerns on to his management, the owner of the restaurant. I happened to have a sample of a compostable to-go container in my car, which I brought in for Kevin to check out. He wrote down the company name and phone number which was on the package and promised to look into using their products.

We talked about their other practices and found that they do buy local food whenever they can. They get baked goods from Masada Bakery in Norcross (certified organic, btw) and get much of their meat and veggies from Leonard's Farmers' Market in Cumming.

The food was very fresh and tasty, the service was friendly and attentive, and Kevin seemed sincere when he promised to look into alternative packaging for their containers. We liked the place, the people, and the food. Now if they can just get rid of that nasty Styrofoam, we'll like it all even better.
